The Aberford Area NewsLetter

Issue One – January 2002

A Happy New Year to you all.

Welcome to the first Parish Council’s Newsletter of 2002.  This newsletter has a special theme: to let you know about our first Parish Plan and to ask for your help with the production of it.

Last year the government announced in its Rural White Paper that it wanted to see 1,000 villages across rural England produce a Parish Plan which would give people living in the countryside a chance to say what they like and dislike about their community and what they would like to see take place to improve it.  The three Parish Councils covering Aberford (Lotherton cum Aberford, Parlington with Sturton Grange and Aberford) have recently been granted over £6,000 from the Countryside Agency to produce our own Parish Plan.  This money, combined with contributions from the Parish Councils and an application to Leeds City Council, means that we have enough funds to produce a first-class document, covering the whole of Aberford and its surrounding countryside, which will enable us to plan for our future over the next 10 years or so.

Who will do the Plan?

We will be helped by Yorkshire Planning Aid to undertake all the necessary consultations with everyone who lives in and around the village.  Their job (Yorkshire Planning Aid) will be to work with the school to produce a scale model of the village which will then be set up in the village hall for everyone to come along to and use this model as a way of indicating what they like and dislike about Aberford, and what they want to see hear in the future, a process called ‘Planning for Real’ â*.

The Healthcheck

We will also be undertaking a comprehensive audit or healthcheck of the three parishes which will look at all aspects of life in Aberford.  This exercise will provide essential information for the future.  It will show exactly what Aberford is like in 2002 and help us measure what we plane to do.  For this exercise we will be setting up four Action Groups to look at key issues under the following themes:

For this part of the Plan we need  Volunteers, please!!!  If you have an interest in any of these themes or wish to get involved in helping to produce the plan, please get touch with us.  For just a few hours of your time you can make a real contribution to the village.

When will all this be done by?

The Plan will ready in draft form by May for all to see and comment on.  The final version will be completed by July 2002, and all households will receive a summary of final document.
